If you are new at looking for wool fabrics, it may seem a daunting task — so start off by taking a deep breath and relaxing! Sewers love the feel of fabrics and fibers and that is a great way to begin to make your selection of wool fabrics. While it is true that many wool garments will be lined, are you really wanting to spend time and money working with fabric you are not happy touching? What feels nice on your skin? Those softer wool fabrics will also be more forgiving to work with as well as easier to shape and ease into place. The old stereotype that all wool fabrics are scratchy and hot has (thankfully!) fallen away.
You are living at a great place in time – wool is being ‘re-discovered’ by many designers as the best natural fiber for temperature control, wicking properties, and wearability. Wool accepts dye easily and is manufactured in all weights of fabrics from the very sheer to carpet weights. Buttery soft wools, lightweight wool knits, and beautiful colors are readily available. Many independent fabric shops are stocking wool fabrics and they are very happy to show off their inventory and answer your questions. Well-known mills like Pendleton and Woolrich also have many fabric yardage choices for sale at reasonable prices.
Now, it is your turn – jump in with a fabric selection and an easy pattern – join the sewers who have discovered the joy of sewing with wool!
